Researchers found that gestational diabetes may put women at risk for various cardiovascular illnesses later in life. Women with a history of gestational diabetes had an increased risk (7.8 per 1,000 person-years )for total cardiovascular outcomes compared with those who did not. Chronic metabolic comorbidities may partly explain the association between gestational diabetes and later cardiovascular illness.
The study was conducted by Seung Mi Lee, MD, Ph.D., of the Seoul National University College of Medicine. The research team used data from U.K. Biobank, a prospective cohort of more than 500,000 people ages 40 to 60, who were enrolled from 2006 to 2010 with ongoing follow-up.
