Indian doctors conducted the first bloodless heart transplant in Asia

Bloodless heart transplant procedures are very complex since blood loss must be carefully assessed and managed.

Doctors at Ahmedabad’s Marengo CIMS Hospital accomplished a medical first by successfully performing the first bloodless heart transplant in Asia.

This novel technique was performed on 52-year-old Chandraprakash Garg, who was suffering from end-stage heart failure and Ischemic Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

The donor was a 33-year-old person who sadly perished in an automobile accident.

In Depth

Bloodless heart transplant procedures are quite complex and need a high level of experience. In the end, they eliminate the need for blood transfusions by carefully assessing and managing blood loss. Given the possible hazards and consequences associated with blood transfusions, this is a huge breakthrough.

Blood transfusions can provide dangers and consequences during high-end surgery. Transfusions of blood are regarded as organ transplants in and of themselves, requiring strict monitoring and management. Blood is another kind of organ.

Remarkably, the patient only needed nine days to be released from the hospital—a significant difference from the usual 21–24 days that patients receiving a traditional heart transplant must stay there. This zero-transfusion strategy shortens hospital stays, improves overall clinical outcomes, and dramatically lowers the short- and long-term problems related to transfusions.

A blood transfusion-free heart transplant, according to the operation’s lead surgeon, Dr. Dhiren Shah, is a noteworthy advancement in cardiac surgery that demonstrates the substantial advancements in surgical methods and technology. He also mentioned using the bloodless heart transplant method to construct a Hemostasis Centre of Excellence.

Amidst the procedure, Dr. Niren Bhavsar, a cardiothoracic anaesthetist, emphasised the significance of consistently monitoring the patient’s vital signs and other metrics, as well as controlling blood pressure and coagulation markers.

Result

The professionals observed that the patient had a smooth recovery because many of the deterrent effects of the blood transfusion were not observed during the postoperative period because there was none. They were proud of this incredible accomplishment and said it was a big step in making the hospital a centre of excellence.
